Amazon Pay Kotak Business Credit Card: 5% Cashback for Small Businesses — Is It Better Than Amazon Pay ICICI?

Amazon and Kotak Mahindra Bank have built a cashback card for sole proprietors and small businesses. It looks familiar on paper. It is built for something completely different.

Executive Takeaways & Key Findings

The Amazon Pay Kotak Business Credit Card earns Prime members 5% on eligible Amazon Business purchases and flights, 2% on bills through Amazon Pay, and 1% elsewhere. The Rs 499 annual fee is waivable on Rs 3 lakh of Off-Amazon spend. For personal Amazon shopping, the Amazon Pay ICICI card remains the cleaner choice. For genuine business procurement, the Kotak card makes a compelling case.

Amazon Pay has had one of India's most recognisable cashback credit cards for years: the Amazon Pay ICICI Bank Credit Card. Now Amazon is taking a similar idea into a very different market.

Amazon Pay and Kotak Mahindra Bank announced the Amazon Pay Kotak Business Credit Card on September 9, 2026, specifically for sole proprietors and small-business owners registered with Amazon Business. Unlike the Amazon Pay ICICI card, this isn't really designed for buying a phone, ordering household products, or maximising personal Amazon shopping. It is built around business procurement, bills, travel, and short-term working capital.

That distinction matters.

At first glance, the reward structure looks remarkably familiar: up to 5% cashback on Amazon, 2% on certain Amazon Pay transactions, and 1% elsewhere. But once you get into the details, these are two cards meant for completely different customers.

The reward structure is refreshingly straightforward.

Cashback:3 months on eligible purchases

Amazon also says eligible Amazon Business customers continue to get GST benefits on qualifying purchases, and that the card will come with offers on AWS credits covering services such as AI, cloud computing, and data storage.

There is one detail worth understanding before getting excited about the 5% number: the 5%/3% cashback on eligible Amazon Business and flight/hotel transactions is capped at 5% of the card's monthly credit limit.

For example, if your credit limit were Rs 2 lakh, 5% of that would be Rs 10,000. That would effectively put the relevant monthly cashback ceiling at Rs 10,000 under this rule. For most small businesses that is still a generous ceiling, but it means the cashback isn't technically uncapped.

What Makes This a Business Credit Card?

This is where the card becomes more interesting than simply calling it an "Amazon Pay ICICI for businesses."

Imagine you run a small digital agency. During a month you buy two laptops and office equipment from Amazon Business, pay your broadband and mobile bills, book a flight to meet a client, and pay for miscellaneous business expenses elsewhere.

Those are exactly the types of expenses this card is trying to capture.

Amazon says the card combines cashback with GST-compliant invoicing and working-capital flexibility. Amazon Business itself allows eligible business customers to make purchases with GST invoices and potentially claim applicable input tax credit, subject to the usual GST rules and eligibility.

The 48-Day Interest-Free Period

The up-to-48-day interest-free period is also more meaningful for a business than it might initially sound.

Suppose inventory has to be purchased today but your customers won't pay their invoices for another three weeks. A credit card can temporarily bridge that timing difference without immediately pulling money out of the business bank account—as long as the card bill is ultimately paid in full and on time.

That's a useful feature, but it shouldn't be confused with free long-term financing. Carrying an outstanding credit-card balance beyond the interest-free period can quickly wipe out whatever you earned in cashback.

Amazon Pay Kotak Business vs Amazon Pay ICICI

This is probably the comparison most people will make. They look similar on paper, but CardRecommend wouldn't treat one as a replacement for the other.

The Amazon Pay ICICI Bank Credit Card remains exceptionally simple for an ordinary Amazon shopper. ICICI currently lists no joining or annual fee, 5% back for Prime members on eligible Amazon.in purchases, 3% for non-Prime members, 2% on eligible Amazon Pay categories/partner transactions and 1% on other eligible payments. ICICI also states there is no overall limit on earnings. Rewards are automatically transferred to the linked Amazon account as Amazon Pay balance.

If you're simply an individual who shops frequently on Amazon, there is no reason to look at the Kotak Business card instead. Amazon Pay ICICI is still the cleaner personal-shopping card. The Kotak card makes sense when those Amazon purchases belong to a business.

The Annual Fee Waiver Catch

The Rs 499 annual fee itself isn't particularly high. But the waiver condition deserves attention.

Amazon specifies that the Rs 499 + taxes annual fee is waived after Rs 3 lakh of eligible annual Off-Amazon purchases.

The words "Off-Amazon" are important. If you're taking this card because you spend heavily on Amazon Business, don't automatically assume those purchases will help you reach the Rs 3 lakh annual-fee waiver threshold.

That makes the waiver slightly less generous than a headline saying simply "Rs 3 lakh annual spend waiver" would suggest.

At the same time, Rs 499 isn't a fee worth chasing aggressively. If the card saves a business several thousand rupees through genuine spending it was going to do anyway, paying Rs 499 rather than manufacturing spending purely to obtain a waiver would make much more sense.

How Does It Compare With Other Business Credit Cards?

The strongest competition doesn't necessarily come from Amazon Pay ICICI. It comes from cards specifically designed around broader Indian business expenses, such as the HDFC Bank BizGrow Credit Card and HDFC Bank BizPower Credit Card.

HDFC BizGrow Breakdown

HDFC Bank BizGrow takes a broader approach to business spending. Its accelerated programme gives 10X CashPoints (approx. 3.33% value at Rs 0.25/CP) on utility payments, GST and income-tax payments, ClearTax, business software (Tally, AWS, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365), and flights/hotels through SmartBuy Biz Deals.

However, BizGrow requires spending over Rs 10,000 in the billing cycle to unlock the 10X rate, and total accelerated CashPoints are capped at 1,500 per month (worth up to Rs 375). It is ideal for small businesses with varied monthly operational bills rather than heavy single-merchant procurement.

HDFC BizPower Breakdown

HDFC Bank BizPower moves further up the ladder. It features 5X Reward Points on GST and income tax, utility bills, Google Ads, Meta Ads, and productivity tools, plus an interest-free period of up to 55 days.

Key changes to keep in mind: HDFC's 2026 update introduced a fair-usage limit capping tax rewards to a maximum of 2 Income Tax and 2 GST transactions per cycle (after unlocking with Rs 25,000 non-tax spend). Domestic lounge access (2 visits/quarter) requires Rs 75,000 spend in the preceding calendar quarter. International lounge access remains uncertain and was not confirmed in the latest cardholder schedule.

CardRecommend's take: There isn't one universally "best business credit card." If your primary procurement happens on Amazon Business, the Amazon Pay Kotak card delivers direct cashback. If your major expenditures are government taxes, digital advertising, utilities, and multi-vendor SaaS, HDFC BizGrow and BizPower offer broader rewards.

Who Should Consider the Amazon Pay Kotak Business Credit Card?

Four use cases stand out clearly.

Amazon Business-heavy businesses: If Amazon Business is already one of your main procurement channels, earning 5% as a Prime member on eligible purchases could be meaningful. A business spending Rs 50,000 per month on Amazon Business—laptops, furniture, office supplies—would earn Rs 2,500 every month at the 5% rate, or Rs 30,000 annually, before hitting the credit-limit-based cap.

Sole proprietors separating business and personal expenses: Keeping business purchases on a dedicated card makes expense tracking considerably cleaner than mixing office purchases with groceries, restaurants, and personal shopping. That administrative clarity has real value, even if the reward rate were the only consideration.

Businesses with uneven cash flow: The interest-free period can give some breathing room between purchasing goods and receiving customer payments. This is a well-understood working-capital technique used routinely by small businesses in every industry.

Small technology businesses: Amazon specifically mentions credits for AI services, cloud computing, and storage. The exact value and eligibility of these promotions should be verified directly before assigning them any monetary value—but for a company already running workloads on AWS, this is worth investigating.

Who Should Skip It?

Don't get this card simply because you like Amazon.

If you're buying primarily for personal use, the lifetime-free Amazon Pay ICICI is a more natural fit. It costs nothing, has no spend conditions, and earns uncapped 5% on Amazon.in for Prime members.

If most of your business expenditure consists of GST, income tax, Google Ads, SaaS subscriptions, and other operational expenses that don't flow through Amazon Business, compare the numbers carefully against cards like HDFC BizPower and BizGrow before committing.

And if your Amazon Business expenditure is modest, a dedicated Amazon Business cashback card isn't going to transform your rewards picture.

The spending pattern should determine the card—not the 5% headline.

Exclusions You Shouldn't Ignore

Based on the official launch material, cashback isn't available on categories including:

  • EMI transactions
  • Fuel
  • Rent
  • Digital wallet loads
  • Education payments
  • Amazon purchases converted to EMI

That last point matters particularly for business buyers who might convert large laptop or server purchases to EMI at checkout. The 5% rate applies to full-price purchases, not EMI conversions.

The advertised 1% on other spending should therefore not be read literally as 1% on absolutely everything. Always judge a card on the reward rate for your actual transactions, after caps and exclusions.

How to Apply

This isn't being distributed like a conventional mass-market Kotak credit card. Amazon says small-business owners registered on Amazon Business can apply through Amazon Business directly. The process is digital, requires minimal documentation, and eligible applicants can receive a credit decision within minutes.

If you don't already use Amazon Business, that distinction matters: this product is being positioned around Amazon's business ecosystem rather than ordinary Amazon.in customers. Approval and the eventual credit limit remain subject to the issuer's eligibility and underwriting criteria. See Amazon's official announcement for the most current application details.

CardRecommend's Verdict

The Amazon Pay Kotak Business Credit Card is a sensible, uncomplicated product. Amazon and Kotak haven't tried to turn this into a complicated premium card, and that restraint is the right call for small-business buyers who already live inside the Amazon Business ecosystem.

For a seller, consultant, agency, retailer, or small office already sourcing equipment and supplies through Amazon Business, the story is appealing: existing expenditure earns a straightforward 5% for Prime members without requiring a complicated points-redemption strategy.

The limitations are real but specific. The cashback ceiling is tied to your credit limit rather than a fixed rupee cap, the fee waiver applies only to Off-Amazon spending, and the strongest reward is concentrated around the Amazon ecosystem. A business that spends Rs 1 lakh every month across GST, advertising, software, vendors, and offline procurement but only Rs 5,000 on Amazon Business isn't the customer who benefits most.

We would not recommend cancelling an Amazon Pay ICICI card to get this one. They solve different problems. Amazon Pay ICICI continues to be one of India's cleanest personal Amazon cashback cards because it has no joining or annual fee and ICICI advertises uncapped earnings. The Amazon Pay Kotak Business card should be thought of as the business-side companion: procurement, business travel, bills, and cash-flow management.

For the right business, that's a much more interesting proposition than simply calling it another 5% cashback card.
